Why we ask for photos before we promise anything
Some movers will quote a piano over the phone in thirty seconds. We will not, and there is a reason: the difference between an easy piano move and a dangerous one is invisible until you see the stairs. Here is the system we run on every piano lead:
- Photos are required, not optional. The piano itself, and if stairs are involved, the staircase from the bottom looking up and from the top looking down, plus any tight landings, turns, or doorways. Stairs photos are mandatory before we confirm a crew.
- Safe crew first, smaller crew only if proven. If anything is unclear, we recommend the safer crew size and only reduce it if the photos and our Fleet Manager confirm it is genuinely easier. Never the other way around.
- Extra-heavy handling is on the quote, not sprung on you. Pianos fall into our extra-heavy category, and that handling appears on your written quote before you book. No move-day surprises.
- The Fleet Manager signs off. Heavy, high-value, or tricky-access items get a second set of experienced eyes before the day. For pianos, that is every single one.
This is the same standard we apply to safes, marble and stone pieces, and other extra-heavy items; the piano is just the most famous member of the family.

What does it cost to move a piano?
The honest answer: it depends on the piano, the stairs, and the distance, which is exactly why we plan from photos. Here is how the number forms:
- Within a bigger move, the piano is part of your hourly crew, with extra-heavy handling for the piano itself shown on the quote.
- A standalone upright move is quoted from your photos: the piano type, ground level or stairs, and the drive between homes set the crew and the time. Stairs mean a minimum 4-person crew, which is a safety rule, not an upsell.
- Extra-heavy handling applies to pianos by weight class and appears on your written quote before you book.
Monday through Thursday is our discounted weekday rate, so flexible dates save money here too. California requires Double Drive Time: if the drive between locations is over 15 minutes, that drive time is counted twice, and we tell you before you book. Depending on the job, a trip fee may apply, and if it does it shows on your quote.

Most pianos we move travel with the rest of the home, and that is the best way to do it: the piano gets its specialist handling inside a move that is already planned, wrapped, and staffed. It is also the only way we move baby grands and grands: as part of a full household move or a long-distance move, ground floor to ground floor, with a 6-person crew, so the hardest piano move is done under the safest conditions. And when a grand can only leave by crane, we handle that too as part of a bigger move: we treat your move as a project, and arranging and managing the crane work is part of the solution.

Can you move an upright piano up or down stairs?
Yes, and it is one of the most common piano jobs we do. Any upright going through stairs gets a minimum 4-person crew, and we require photos of the staircase from the bottom looking up and from the top looking down, plus any landings or tight turns, before we confirm the crew. That is a safety rule that protects your piano, your home, and our movers.

Do you move baby grand and grand pianos?
Yes, with honest conditions: we move baby grands and grands as part of a full household move or a long-distance move, ground floor to ground floor, with a 6-person crew. We do not take them as standalone single-item jobs. As for cranes: when a piano can only be moved by crane and it is part of a bigger move, we arrange and manage that as a custom solution; a standalone rigging-only job with no move attached is better served by a dedicated rigging specialist. Within those conditions, your grand travels with legs and pedals removed, secured on a piano board, under Fleet Manager-approved planning.

How do you protect the piano during the move?
Thick moving blankets and stretch wrap on the piano, corner protection on the case, floor runners and door-jamb padding in both homes, and a piano board for grands with legs and pedals removed and packed separately. In the truck the piano is strapped and braced so it cannot shift. The crew moves it slowly and in sync; there is no dragging and no improvising on a piano.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?
Very likely yes, and that is normal. The move itself plus the change in room, temperature, and humidity will shift the tuning on almost any piano. Let it acclimate in its new spot for a few weeks, then have your tuner in. Careful moving protects the instrument and the finish; tuning is simply part of a piano changing rooms.
